Texas Dust Storm Kills Three as 80 MPH Winds Batter the Plains
In Texas, a deadly dust storm led to tragic consequences. Near Amarillo, a dust storm reduced visibility to near zero, causing a massive 38-car pileup that resulted in three fatalities.
Sgt. Cindy Barkley of the Texas Department of Public Safety described the conditions as "the worst I've ever seen," noting that emergency responders struggled to navigate through the thick dust cloud.
Truck drivers and commuters on Interstate 40 reported dangerous driving conditions as strong winds lifted vast amounts of dust into the air. "There’s a lot of sand and dirt in the air," said Charles Daniel, a truck driver in western Oklahoma. "I’m not pushing it over 55 mph. I’m scared it will blow over if I do."
Wildfires Break Out in the Southern Plains Amid High Winds
As the storm swept through the region, more than 130 wildfires ignited in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and New Mexico. Strong winds helped fuel the blazes, forcing evacuations in several communities.
In Roberts County, Texas, northeast of Amarillo, a fire exploded in size from less than a square mile to more than 32.8 square miles (85 square kilometers) within hours. Fire crews were able to halt its spread by Friday evening. Another fire south of Amarillo reached nearly 3.9 square miles before firefighters managed to contain it.
Emergency officials warned that the combination of dry conditions, strong winds, and low humidity created a "perfect storm" for dangerous wildfires. "These conditions are unlike anything we’ve seen this early in the year," said Texas Fire Chief Mike Slaughter. "We’re asking everyone to remain cautious and follow evacuation orders immediately."
Blizzard Warnings Issued for the Northern Plains
In the northern part of the country, blizzard warnings were in effect for parts of Minnesota, South Dakota, and North Dakota. Heavy snowfall combined with wind gusts of up to 60 mph (97 kph) created whiteout conditions, making travel nearly impossible.
The NWS predicted snow accumulations ranging from 3 to 6 inches, with some areas receiving up to a foot (30 centimeters). The combination of snow and high winds threatened to cause power outages and hazardous road conditions.
Residents in affected areas were urged to stay off the roads and prepare for potential power failures. "These winds and snow will create life-threatening conditions," warned meteorologist Sarah Donovan. "Travel should be avoided unless absolutely necessary."

The widespread storm has already caused significant power outages, leaving more than 300,000 homes and businesses in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana without electricity. High winds toppled power lines, trees, and even tractor-trailers on major highways.
